This is a difficult question, for first time owners i would say that hamsters are best because they generally smaller which is easier for smaller hands, despite this rats are really cool too because they are usually smarter than hamsters and can sit on your shoulder ect. I had a rat and it was VICIOUS!! so be careful. Come to think of it , the rat would probobly have been nice if i was brave enought to tame it! hope i helped ox
