Well..., I have just gathered three snails from my garden. (I see many each night who visit for a midnight snack.) The 3 are sitting on a plate with some regular grocery store green cabbage. All three have been munching quite happily for several minutes now. I think they like it! Ok, yeah, after like 10 minutes now... they love it.
After a little more research, I have identified my snails as Helix Aspera or the Common European Brown Snail. They live here in California. I have a lot of them in my area. They are very happy eating almost everything (especially Cabbage) here is a list of other foods for these snails:
Buxus microphylla 'Japonica' (California boxwood), Crinum sp., Cupressus sempervirens L. (Italian cypress), Grevillea sp., Hibiscus spp., and Juniperus spp., Rosa sp., and other unidentified plants and shrubs at the Davie, Florida, infestation (1969). Gunn (1924) listed 49 plants as hosts in South Africa: Vegetables: cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, bean, beet, brussels sprouts, lettuce, mangel, onion, peas, radish, tomato, and turnips. Cereals: barley, oats, and wheat. Flowers: alyssum, antirrhinum, aster, balsam, carnation, candytuft, chrysanthemum, dianthus, dahlia, delphinium, hollyhock, larkspur, lilies, marguerite, mignonette, nasturtium, pansy, pentstemon, petunia, phlox, stock, sweet-pea, verbena, and zinnia. Trees: apple, apricot, citrus, peach, and plum. Shrubs: hibiscus, magnolia, and rose. === ===

Yes. Snails can eat about the same things that people eat.
Different types of snails eat different things. Many snails eat algae or plant material. However there are a great number of predatory snails that eat fish, insects, and other animals. Most land snails eat plants, but snails that live in the ocean have a wide variety of diets.
Snails do indeed eat chrysanthemums. But you can hand pick the snails off the flowers. Then drop the snails in a bucket of soapy water.
