It's not the swimming, it's the food. Hot water, like in the tropics, is hard on plant life and plankton, two things fish eat. If you've ever been to the tropics, you will remember how clear the water is - that's because there are very few microorganisms living there. Cold water, on the other hand, is full of algae and plankton! Fish have plenty to eat, and many of them prefer to live in colder water because of that.

Hi! Tadpoles usually live in like 70 to 85 degrees. They can not have very cold water, or very warm water. Also, Tadpoles need quite alot of space, if you were to put tadpoles in a regular sized fish bowl, you could probably be able to fit about 4-5 tadpoles. Hope this helpd!

One reason fish have cold blood might be the 'false economy' of having to heat up their bodies. Approximately 80% of human energy goes towards heating our bodies to a stable temperature. However, for fish and reptiles to do this, it may not have been a evolutionary advantage. For example snakes and crocodiles can gorge themselves on one large meal and then not have to feed again for months. This would not be possible if they had a 'central heating system'. Likewise fish would need to devote large amounts of energy towards heating up their bodies in colder water and it makes sense for them to merely adapt to it instead. An example of this is the fact that although fish are exothermic, many species are capable of surviving in large temperature variations (so long as they are not too rapid) that would quickly kill most mammals. Therefore although mammals are warm blooded, they are far less tolerant of changes in temperature that deviate too far from whatever their species ideal is.

"Fish have cold blood because they live under-water."

"Fish need to have cold blood in order to live under-water"

noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont agree with above answer, generally no, however some fish have evolved over time in the wild,

depends on the species like geophagus brasiliensis (american cichlid) can and have adapted to saltwater & have been found in NSW rivers, from tropical enthusiasts who have released them from there home aquariums.

over time some fish can be slowly deal with change if you ease them into it.

also depending on how cold and what species your talking about, can you give me a little more information on what fish & how cold your talking.

why do fishes survive in cold water rather than warm water They can survive in warm water to a point, but not hot. Cold water is preferable for one major reason - cold water can hold far more dissolved oxygen. But it does slow the metabolism of a cold-blooded animal such as a fish. Hot water would completely screw body chemistry.

When the water is warm a fish will start breathing faster because the fish's pulse as well as it's liver activity increases. If the water is cold the fish will be calm and it's pulse will be normal therefore the fish will breath slower.

_________

Also to add fishes metabolism is slower in colder water, which means that they need less oxygen than in warmer water. Cold water contains more dissolved oxygen than in warmer water which means the fish don't have to work as hard to breathe. Similarly fish breathe faster in warmer water because their metabolism speeds up, which requires them to need more oxygen.

. The breathing rate of aquatic animals is faster than that of terrestrial animals because the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water in much less than the amount outside, so they have to breathe more in order to get more oxygen.

Can you convert your fresh water fish tank into tropical without killing the fish?

You can definitely do that, but you haven't made it clear that you have cold water in the tank before. If you can keep the water temperature at 72 F, then you can keep both cold water fishes like gold fishes and non-aggressive community tropical fishes like gouramis, platys, mollies, algae eaters etc with gold fish.
