I can't remember at the moment if their happiness or hunger levels decrease while sleeping, but if they do it doesn't matter so long as you feed and play with them upon awakening. They won't run away while asleep, but if they fell asleep with no hunger or happiness points you should make sure to be ready to take care of them as soon as they wake up.
