Do telephones work without electricity?

Did you ever noticed that when the electricity goes out but the phone often sill works Why?

Traditional telephones are powered by the local telephone exchange and do not need to be connected to a mains supply. Modern telephones often use a separate supply to power the additional features of telephones such as memory diallers, number displays, wireless handsets and so on. Most better designed modern telephones will allow the phone to be used as a basic telephone even when local power is lost. Cordless phones will not work when the home power is lost.

Why doesn't a corded phone work when there is power outage?

If you have an old style telephone that does not need a wall adapter to work, it will be rare for it to ever be without power. This is because the phone lines have a small current running through them all the time, and they are powered independently from the power grid we rely on to get power for our homes. You can't feel it, but it's there. That voltage goes up when the phone is ringing to about 9 volts. This was because in the old days, telephones were passive, and they needed that voltage to work or ring the bells inside it. Most areas still support old dial telephones that have to be powered by the phone line itself. It's possible though, that some areas have made the full switchover to fiber optic lines that would be unable to power the old telephones. In this case, a "wired" land line would not work. Nowadays, phones plug into wall sockets also, so they are powered off of the household circuits. When power goes out to your house, you phone will not work because no power is getting to the wall socket.
