It is interesting that God is generally perceived as omnipotent, which means that Satan would be helpless against anything that God chose to do to him. Yet, Christian tradition holds that Satan sought to overthrow God and rule in his place, but was defeated. Another widely held view is that Jesus will return to defeat Satan in the final apocalyptic battle, or armageddon. No one ever seems to notice an inconsistency here.
The Jewish understanding of Satan is at least more rational. Far from being the devil, Satan is the loyal assistant of God, as we see in the Book of Job. Here, God twice sends Satan to test the righteousness of Job, first telling Satan to do as he chooses except hurt Job, then giving Satan permission to harm Job but not kill him. In this story, God and Satan are certainly not fighting!
