Assuming this question is about the United States Air Force Academy, you do not have to be in the military to get into the Air Force Academy. The majority of cadets are straight out of high school and it is their first exposure to the military when they arrive on the first day of Basic Cadet Training.
However, on the first day of Basic Cadet Training the summer before your freshman year, you officially become a member of the Air Force. You are at that point on active duty with the full time job of getting your degree and earning your commission as a second lieutenant. In exchange for four years of tuition free world-class education, graduates must serve a minimum of 5 years on active duty as an officer and then another 3 in the Reserves before their committment to the military is completed.

∙ 12y agoPresuming you are talking about the US Air Force Academy, the answer is YES. Generally speaking, you owe 8 years of duty in the Air Force in exchange for your education at the Academy. After 5 years of active duty service, you may be able to serve the remainder of your term in the Reserves. Occasionally, the military may decide that it does not wish to retain you after your initial 5 years of active duty, and you may be discharged then, with no further obligation.
