The degree you receive if you graduate law school is Juris Doctor, or J.D. for short. The J.D. is not the same as a Ph.D., a Doctor of Philosophy. A Ph.D. is a degree that most college professors either have or are working toward.

Keep in mind that some professors do not have Ph.D.s. In some schools, take business for example, some professors have completed graduate work but have another experience that makes them valuable. It could be managing a fund, being in the private sector for many years, teaching a business law course, or being accomplished in other areas as an author, director of a company, etc.

To answer your question - at the very least, if you have earned a J.D., you can teach at a law school. It doesn't seem like a guarantee anywhere else.

If I had to make a suggestion to the person who posed this question, I would recommend identifying the type of college courses that he or she would like to teach. Then go to various colleges' websites and look up professors in those areas. Most schools have biographies that list the credentials of the professors.

Good luck!

Typically, the minimum educational requirement is a master's degree in the subject you are teaching, with a doctorate preferred. I have seen some individuals teaching at a college level, but just in lab science areas. I am a college professor, and have never seen an individual with a bachelor's degree teaching at my institution.

Most of the time yes, they want a master's degree, but I suppose it isn't impossible to teach without one.
