Best Answer

A visa is not necessary, but you do need permission.

Another Answer

Depending on your route of travel, the countries through which you journey may require a visa, or at least a passport.

You can visit Antarctica as a tourist, or you can live and work there temporarily if you have a job in science, studying the health of planet Earth. In these cases, you are an employee of your government.

Antarctica is uninhabited (not counting a small outpost of scientists doing research) and it has no customs and Immigration department, or indeed, no government, to enforce any kind of restrictions about who can go there, or to issue visas, and so forth. You are free to go there. But it is still a good idea to have a passport, so that you won't run into any complications getting back into the country from which you left.

You may need a passport and a visa, depending on the route you take to your Antarctic destination and your starting location. The countries through which you travel will require paperwork.
