Cellular Respiration takes place in the Mitochondria. Mitochondria is where Krebs cycle and electron transport chain produces mass quantity of ATP for the cell. When a glucose enters the cell, glycolysis occurs within the cytoplasm converting the glucose into pyruvates, which then enters the mitochondria for further use.

The Mitochondria are the site of aerobic cellular respiration because of the mitochondria's unique double bilayer, similar to the chloroplast. Mitochondria have a channel protein called ATP Synthase on their bilayer which, in coordination with cellular respiration, allows ADP to be phosphorylated into ATP, which is this main end goal of Cellular Respiration.

Cellular respiration can be described as:

Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy (As ATP)

Without energy, cellular functions such as active removal of waste can not be performed. All organisms need energy to survive.

What store's energy that is released in respiration come from?

Respiration releases energy for use in life processes. There are two types of respiration, aerobic (uses oxygen) and anaerobic (does not use oxygen). Respiration can produce useful products that have uses in a range of industries.

What structures are common to both pant cells and animal cells?

Both: mitochondria, golgi bodies, rough/smooth endoplasmic reticulum, cytoplasm, cell membrane, lysosomes, nucleus, ribosomes, nucleolus, Plants: cell wall, chloroplasts, large central vacuole Animal: Centrioles

What do mitochondrea do?

Mitochondriaare the organelles that convert chemical energy, stored in food, into a compound that can be used by the cell. The mitochondria break down food and turn it into energy for the cell to use. Inside the mitochondria energy is stored and food is converted for use in a cell. The number of mitochondria in the cell can depend on the purpose of the cell. They are the "power plants" of cells. They produce energy. In multicellular organisms the mitochondria play an important role in apoptosis (death). They break down sugars to make energy. By analogy they would be the furnace compartment (where the fire burns) of a steam train. Added: The mitochondria are the source of the cell's ATP; the energy currency of the cell. Food eaten is oxidized and through final process of oxidative phosphorylation ATP is synthesized and the cell can do its work. Mitochondria improve the efficiency of turning food into energy (without them only fermentation or alternative chemical reactions are possible). Since the mitochondria generate energy for the cell, they are also called, the batteries of the cell, powering all cellular activities.

What organelle requires ATP?

Virtually all organelles need ATP in order to function correctly.

What does cyloplasm do?

The cytoplasm is the site where most cellular activities occur, such as many metabolic pathways, and processes such as cell division.
