he couldn't have because avid McCallum signed a 2 year contract only a month ago so that means he has to be in the next season! Yay!
He supposedly had a heart attack in the last two minutes of the episode, but like the other answer he did sign another contract so he will be in the next season. And because it was a finale, it was kinda like a cliff hanger--to make you want to keep watching.

disappointment he was my favorite character. Hopefully he will not be dead but the answer will remain unknown until the next season starts.
