Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) was the third and youngest child of Joseph Ratzinger, Sr., a police officer, and Maria Peintner. Georg Ratzinger, his brother, is still alive. He is a priest and former director of the Regensburger Domspatzen choir. Maria Ratzinger, his sister, never married and managed his household until her death in 1991.

No, the new Holy Father is usually chosen from the Latin rite clergy, and to be ordained in the Latin rite Catholic Church, one takes a vow of celibacy, which means that you are not going to have a family: a wife and children. The pope may be chosen from any male adult Catholic, although it is usually from the Cardinals these days. If a pope were chosen who was a married man, then he might well have children. In other words, clergy are not permitted, in the Latin Rite to marry and have children, and since the Pope is usually chosen from the top clergy, then he would most probably already have a vow of celibacy, but the pope, himself, is not bound to it by virtue of his office - until he is ordained.

No pope in recent times has had any children, but this was not always the case, even if popes were not allowed to get married. Pope Innocent VIII was the first of the popes to acknowledge openly his illegitimate children, rather than claim them as "nephews," but others followed.
