Shigella also produce a number of toxins (Shiga toxin and others) that increase the amount of fluid secretion by the intestinal tract. This fluid secretion is a major cause of the diarrhea symptoms.
Shigella is a type of bacteria that can cause an infection. It can cause bad things such as Arthritis, dehydration, and seizures. You can get it by direct contact with bacteria or by swallowing bacteria.
Shigella dysentery attack by getting the germs of dysentery transferred to next victim by so called fecal oral route. Means feces are transferred to the mouth of victim. This happens by three ways. 1) By means of flies. A house fly has 6 legs and those legs have many hair like branches on it. ( You can see under microscope.) They carry thousands of germ when they sit on faces of patient of dysentery as they go out door in many developing countries for defecation. Then flies may go and sit on food and transfer the germs to the food of victim. 2) By way of hands. If the patient go for defecation and serve food with the same hands, then germs are transferred to the victim. 3) If there is rain fall and germs will enter the shallow well through soil. (Shallow well does not denote any depth of well. Germs will travel to any depth till layer of stone is there. Below that there is 'Deep' well.) If you drink contaminated water, you will get the dysentery.
Shigella is one of many causes of food poisoning.
Bloody diarrhea is an indication that Shigella may be responsible.
Symptoms can be limited to only mild diarrhea or go on to full-blown dysentery.
The common name for Shigella is Dysentery. This causes a severe, watery diarrhea. A person loses so much water it is fatal. This disease also is caused by an amoeba.
Shigella accounts for about 10% of diarrhea illness in travelers to Mexico, South America, and the tropics.
Shigella are extremely infectious bacteria, and ingestion of just 10 organisms is enough to cause severe diarrhea and dehydration.
Shigella accounts for 10-20% of all cases of diarrhea worldwide, and in any given year infects over 140 million persons and kills 600,000, mostly children and the elderly.
A rod-shaped bacteria known to cause food-born ilnesses with symptoms of sudden and severe diarrhea.
Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Yersinia. Clostridium difficile produces a toxin that can cause severe diarrhea.
