No, the Bernina 830 does not require a laptop to run the software. Software such as ArtDesign V1 or ArtLinkV6 can also be run on a desktop computer. You can transfer designs from computer to machine via an included cable if desired, but many owners prefer the ease of a USB stick. The Bernina 830 does quite a bit without any software at all too.
1979... the first two digits represent the year of manufacture based on consistent information from other websites. For example the 830 was first manufactured in 1971 hence the first two digits are 11, 1972 are 12, 1973 are 13, etc. The 830 was manufactured until 1982. See Bernina website: http://www.bernina.com/history-n18-sen.html
You have to check the software provided with the laptop. It must support such features.
$11,000 It depends which 830 you are talking about. If you mean the classic 830 record, I just checked on ebay and in the last 30 days(today is 9/10/12), they are averaging around $450 to $500 dollars. There were a few for less(295-400) and even one at $1000. It depends on what they came with, their condition and if they had a warranty. If you are talking about the newer 830 sewing and embroidery machines, 3 sold in the same 30 day period, 2 in the $8000 dollar range and one for $5,000.
830 would not normally need be written in scientific notation. However, it would be 8.3x102
