During a partial knee replacement you can see less of the knee, so aligning the implant is more difficult, if this is wrong, it will cause bigger problems. Also the remaining condyle can then deteriorate (naturally), needing a full replacement,

According to a 2013 article in AARP, U.S. hospitals charge $50,000, on average, for a total knee replacement (TKR). A partial knee replacement (PKR) typically costs about 10 to 20 percent less than a TKR.

Do you need a partial or total knee replacement if there's no meniscus left in your knee?

Neither, unless it leads to further complications. The miniscus is the cartilage that cushions the knee joint and without it you may experience pain when there is pressure on the bone because that cushion is gone, but only the long term effects of this pressure could lead to a knee replacement.

Is there any Doctors that 's done total knee surgery on someone that's had partial knee replacements?

Yes. I work in an Orthopedic office and many patients that have previously had partial knee replacements are candidates for a total knee replacement. In our office, many of the docs do not do partial knee replacements, especially in younger people because the chance of the cartilage on the other side wearing down necessitating a total knee replacement is quite frequent.

How common is total knee ligament replacement surgery?

There are 5 main types of knee replacement surgery: Total knee replacement. This is the most common form. Your surgeon replaces the surfaces of the thigh bone and shin bone that connects to the knee. Partial knee replacement. If arthritis affects only one side of your knee, this surgery may be a possibility. However, it’s only right for you if you have strong knee ligaments and the rest of the cartilage in the knee is normal. Partial knee replacement can be performed through a smaller cut than is needed for total knee replacement. Patellofemoral replacement. This replaces only the under-surface of the kneecap and the groove the kneecap sits in. This can be very effective for people with chronic kneecap arthritis. Complex (or revision) knee replacement. This procedure may be needed if you have very severe arthritis or if you’ve already had two or three knee replacement surgeries. Cartilage restoration: Sometimes when the knee only has an isolated area of injury or wear this area can be replaced with a living cartilage graft or cells which grow into cartilage.
