According to the Related Link below, severance pay will not affect your unemployment benefits.

Can you travel while on short term disability?

If you are receiving benefits from Social Security Disability Insurance, your moving will not affect the reception of benefits at all. Make sure to alert your Security office of your change of address so that you continue to receive correspondence from Social Security and your checks as well. If you are receiving benefits from Supplemental Security Insurance, moving could change the amount you receive in benefits, and it can also alter your eligibility to receive benefits at all. Some states add a payment to the federal SSI and detract this payment from your check each month. If you are moving from a state with no supplementary payment to one that does have one, your disability check will be slightly smaller in the new state. Disability benefits are also tied to income, so if your income changes, your disability payment will likely change as well. Call your local security office if you have any questions or concerns regarding your disability payments.

Can unemployment benefits and severance from an employer be collected at the same time in NY state?

I did. I received lump sum severance and collected unemployment in NYC. Of course, the regular one week waiting period for unemployment still goes so make sure to apply immediately. Actually, if you think about it, a lump sum payment is really part of your compensation package, so as long you don't keep receiving a paycheck after that, then why shouldn't you be entitled to unemployment like everyone else? I imagine it would be different if you cotinue to receive a paycheck every week for a specified amount of time after you were let go though...

How will my coming retirement affect the disability benefits I'm currently receiving?

There are only a couple factors that would affect your disability benefits. It depends on when you were injured and how you were compensated for the injuries that occured. Your best bet is to contact the Social Security office and ask to speak to someone there about your current situation.

Can an employer take out 401k on a severance package after you cancelled your 401k?

(a) Your unemployment benefits depends on how your severance package is being paid out. If you get lump sum severance, then you are good shape for immediate benefits. But if your ex-company keeps you on payroll until the end of your severance period, then your unemployment benefits MAY not kick-in until you exhaust your severance.(b) I don't think any (early) withdrawal from your 401(k) affects your unemployment benefits - because it is not "earnedincome". Only earned income may affect your benefit.(c) You may be getting the 401(k) match mixed up. Company "match" does not reduce your paycheck - it doesn't affect your paycheck. But be careful about the company match - don't plan for it unless you are sure it is already "vested". Company matches will show up in your 401(k) balance, but it MAY not be yours until vested. Most companies do not automatically vest the match when there is employment separation.

Will moving to another state affect your disability benefits?

Your individual disability insurance policy is portable and benefits will not be affected by moving to a different state. If you have disability insurance through your employer, and move in a new state while working for the same employer, benefits will not be changed. However, if you leave your employer, you may lose the disability insurance benefits through a group DI policy. If you are currently disabled and are receiving disability benefits from the state, you will have to check with the new state regulations on social security DI; If you are receiving benefits through a personal/ individual insurance policy from an insurance company, then benefits are not going to be affected by the state of residence.
