The aluminum that you find in stores/products is generally a alloy composed of different metal elements. This is done in order to make it more corrosion resistant and more powerful in strength. The element Aluminum on the Periodic Table however is pure and is an element.

Not all the elements of the periodic table behave in the same way. However aluminium's behaviour is in keeping with what would be predicted for an element of aluminium's electronic configuration. It reacts similarly to Gallium although it is notable for forming a waterproof oxide layer, hence it usually appears less reactive that it is.

Most, for example an aluminum-steel alloy is used for highway guardrails in some places. When put up it is silvery, but quickly rusts to a pleasant brown color, because of the aluminum the rusting stops when a thin protective non-flaking layer forms. If the guardrail is scratched in a minor accident, the exposed metal in the scratch will rust again until it rebuilds the protective layer. Lasts longer than galvanized guardrail and is almost maintenance free.

Why is an aluminum nail less dense than the actual element?

An aluminum nail that is less dense than the element aluminum would not be made of pure aluminum, but would have to be an alloy of aluminum and some other substance. If an aluminum nail is made of pure aluminum, it would have the same density as the "actual" element.

HOW IS A pure element such as aluminum different than a substance made from this element and one or more other elements?

If it's combined with other elements in a chemical reaction aluminum would lose all it's properties and would have new properties
