Damon Albern and Jamie Hewlett.
Well Gorillaz is a band where the people that play the music are different for different songs. This means that there isn't people in a band as such. However, they have an animated band (the one you see in the music video) which consists of the characters Murdoch, Noodle, 2D and Russell.
Damon Albarn, one of the main people behind Gorillaz, states that it is about the world filling up. The chorus says "overload, overload, overload, coming on to the overload" what he means by this is that the world is filling up or 'overloading'. That is an actual fact, so that's what the chorus means, but I think the verses are more about opening yourself up to music and love. I guess it's all up to interpretation
It comes from rapper Luke "I wanna rock (Doo Doo Brown)""where i heard it from was Feel Good INC. by Gorillaz"Luke's song originated in 1991, while Gorillaz's song was in 2005. So Gorillaz copied Luke 14 years later, obviously. Also, in the song "Still Not A Playa" Big Pun says it. That song was released in 1998.
The song is about how people are so trapped by the media and looking good. In the video, 2D in the tower represents being trapped by the media. Noodle on the windmill represents being free, confident and happy.
The use of characters unlike people in real life
An author needs to really understand people! Study people all the time to see how they act, move, talk, and look. Only when you understand people will you be able to create effective characters. Good characters seem to be alive - they speak like actual people, they act like actual people, and they think and feel like actual people.
Why should anyone like anyone -- people just like other people, and book characters are people.
The story is fiction. There were no "actual people". I am not aware that the producers of the movie ever claimed that it was real.

The movie "Titanic" (1997) is based on the actual shipwreck of the cruise ship RMS Titanic in April, 1912. The film includes much of the factual information on the disaster, and many of the characters were real people who were on the ship. But the central characters Rose (Bukater), Jack (Dawson) and Cal (Hockley) were not actual people.
There are many other characters besides just the main two. You can have sidekicks, helpers, minions, background characters (the people you meet but don't have much of a role in the actual story) -- you can have as many characters as you need for your story.
The Crucible was merely a dramatization of the Salem Witch trials, not the actual trials. Therefore, all the characters in the Crucible are adaptions of real people at the real trials.
