I think it has a bad effect on your digestive system. :( I'm a coffee drinker and I recently stopped drinking coffee because I have been badly constipated, I think being off of coffee has helped a lot. I read a lot of articles on WebMD, and all of them say to stay away from caffeine, they don't say why, but coffee most likely does not help constipation rather makes it worse. I'm sure though if you drink plenty of water, eat the right foods with plenty of fiber, and exercise you can get by with drinking coffee.
Yes, caffeine can give you diarrhoea. It stimulates the gall bladder to release bile, and if it releases too much bile you can get yellow bile diarrhoea. Some people are more susceptible than others.
The fact that caffeine empties out the gall bladder may account for study results that show caffeine drinkers have lower rates of gall bladder disease. Stones don't get a chance to form. On the other hand, people who do have gallstones can find that caffeine causes very painful gallbladder attacks, where stones get stuck in the bile duct.
Caffeine is a diuretic (makes you urinate more). Some people find that it also causes an upset stomach.
