Changing your lifestyle is the only real way to lose weight. If you are will to count calories for the rest of your life then it is a good way to lose weight. However if you start exercising and make smarter food choices, weight loss will come naturally.

Burning more calories than you eat is how you lose weight, regardless of where the calories come from. The reason counting carbs is popular and seems successful, is because Americans get most of their caloric intake from carbs and fats, so it just appears that carbs themselves make you gain weight (and cutting them out will make you lose weight). This is misleading. If you eat a healthy diet, cutting carbs will not help you lose weight, but can actually be harmful to your health.

Calorie-counting works for some people but not everyone. Different individuals process information differently, therefore some people feel more motivated to eat less when they know how many calories are in certain foods. At other times, some people may choose to eat a certain food in replacement of another food that has more calories.
