Can Percocet be used to treat migraines?

Percocet can be used to treat the pain of a migraine. If the patient responds well to the Percocet, they may find that they notice very little, to none of their pain, and are able to wait out the length of the migraine.

It is important to note that in most people, Percocet will simply be a band-aid, and may not sufficiently treat the other symptoms of migraine, such as nausea/vomiting (although in some people, a decrease in pain will ease this), sensitivity to light and sound, and aura.

It also important to note that if you have frequent headaches and/or migraines, you need to watch how often you are taking these types of preparations to treat your pain (yes, this includes OTC meds like Excedrin, Tylenol, and Advil). Using them more than 2-3 days every week, or more than half the days of a month, can predispose a person to rebound headache, which can result in Chronic Daily Headache. And the only way to get rid of rebound headache is to stop taking all the meds that you've been over-taking to treat the headache, and wait through the pain until you are out of the cycle. So it important to NOT get yourself in that cycle.

Some physicians prescribe Norco for certain Migraine patients. Using this medication more than 3 doses in a week may cause rebound or Medication Overuse Headache however. Additionally, there are other newer first line drugs now being prescribed for Migraine that attack the cause for the pain instead of simply covering it up. Hydrocodone is usually prescribed in conjunction with acetaminophen. They both relieve pain. Neither have any chemical action on migraine itself.

It has been supposed that if you are able to get a person's pain down to a certain level, their migraine is more likely to resolve. Perhaps due to the stress (chemical reaction) their body is under from pain, continuing the migraine cycle.

It is also true that the average migraine lasts 24 hours. If you take some hydrocodone, and can manage to fall asleep, you may be able to wake up without a migraine.

Yes, Vicodin may be used to treat some Migraines. It is not a first line drug however, and warnings against using it for Migraine have recently come out. There are other, newer, better drugs out that directly work on the Migraine attack, not just the symptoms. Seek the help of a headache specialist in your area for best results.
