As the charged particles are accelerated through the magnetic field, they emit photons in the direction of their motion, which produce powerful beams of electromagnetic radiation emerging from the magnetic poles. Pretty much when you look at it from far away it looks like it blinking at you so that's why they call it the light house model in the same way when your at sea and you see a blinking light in the distance which is a lighthouse. =)
