It is a base, and this is why it is put in anti acid medication. It reacts with acids in what is known as a neutralization reaction. Now, it is not an extremely strong base (like some hydroxides), but it effectively does the job needed for indigestion.

in most cases it is likely that calcium does not reacts with bases cuz its an alkaline earth metal , or if it does somehow it'll be ignorably slow

No, iron does not react with bases. There are almost no metals that will react with any base. When they do react, they are reacting with the water in the base and not the base itself.
