I live in New York and Medicaid will do root canal therapy on all teeth except the molars. There are fine lines with that as if you are missing other specific anterior teeth (front teeth) in your mouth, they will actually do root canals on molars if you fit this demographic.
There is another fine line here as they will NOT pay for root canal teeth until it can be proven that there is an abscess, and this means pretty much it has to abscess at the root for Medicaid to cover the cost on the root canal therapy. Most teeth cannot be proven, as 2d radiographs don't show anything normally until the abcess at the root occurs. They will also not pay for crowns if you want to crown a root canal therapy tooth.
Waiting for an abcess to occur is not good, and teeth should never be let go till that point. It dimishes the root canal therapy success rates and you're dealing with pain and discomfort for elongated periods of time with a higher potential for tooth loss as an abcess damages the jawbone.

∙ 12y agoIf you have the full Gold Medicaid card dental procedures such as Root Canal therapy is only covered on children and young adults up to the age of 21. On the very day of turning 21 years old the only thing Medicaid program will cover is for a full mouth extraction and one set of dentures and one denture soft realignment per life time. ( provided you are eligible for full mouth extractions- for example healthy teeth will not be extracted just because the patient is 21 years old) There are other types of the Medicaid program such as medically needy that have different stipulations. However, I am not familiar enough with that program to feel comfortable detailing it for you.

∙ 11y agoYes, Michigan Medicaid covers root canals (only one) and crowns. By only one, I mean that once the tooth has had a root canal, if a fistula or abscess develops, medicaid will not cover another root canal for that tooth (re-treat), which will necessitate the need for extraction.
Also, medicaid only covers stainless steel crowns.

I have not seen a supplemental policy that would cover the difference. If you did happen to be lucky enough to find such a policy that would, make sure there is not a limitation for a "pre-existing condition" or a waiting period that would need to be satisfied before "major" treatment, like root canals & crowns, is allowed.
