The bodies of water that border New Zealand are the Pacific Ocean to the east; the Tasman Sea to the west; and the Southern Ocean far to the south (though there is some disagreement about how far north the Southern Ocean extends).

New Zealand has many lakes, mainly of volcanic origin in the North Island, and of glacial origin in the South Island.

Three lakes (at least) are of landslip origin, Waikerimoana in the North, and Lochnagar and Green Lake in the south.

There are a number of significant rivers, too many to list here, but there is a list of NZ rivers and their lengths in wikipedia.org.

A lake in the South Island in New Zealand that's not far from Twizel?

There are numerous lakes in the Waikato region of New Zealand. The largest lake in the Waikato, as well as New Zealand, is Lake Taupo. Regions in New Zealand are based of river catchments, and as Lake Taupo is drained by the Waikato River, it is part of Waikato. Other lakes include Lake Rotoroa in central Hamilton and eight artificial lakes on the Waikato River, including Lake Karapiro, the host of the 2010 Rowing World Championships. These are just some of the lakes; there are plenty more around the region.
