Salt water freezes at a lower temperature because the high salt content in the water lowers the freezing point but not by a lot.

Why is the temperature needed to freeze the ocean water lower than the temperature needed to freeze the surface of a freshwater lake?

Dissolved salts in water contribute to a decrease of the freezing point.

Does salt water freeze at the same temperature as normal water?

no, because if you put saltwater and freshwater in the freezer saltwater will not freeze completely ,because it has salt in it and it will not freeze at the same rate as freshwater that is my answer to this question.

Why does beer freeze and liquor does not?

Actually, liquor does freeze, only at far lower temperatures than water. That is because alcohol has a much lower freezing point, like the antifreeze we put in car radiators to keep the water from freezing in cold weather. Liquor does freeze but at a lot lower temperature than water, this is due to the alcoholic content. The higher the alcohol content the lower the temperature need to freeze it

Does methanol lower the freezing point?

Methanol will freeze at negative 143 (Fahrenheit)/ negative 97 (Celsius). If it is added to water (freezing point of 32*F/0*C) then it will make the water freeze at a lower temperature. So yes, methanol will lower the freezing point of any liquid that freezes at a higher temperature than methanol. But methanol cannot lower the freezing point of any liquid that will still be liquid at -143*F/-97*C.

Is the freezing point of ice cream lower or higher than the freezing point of water?

It is lower.

Why does the Arctic Ocean freeze and the Pacific does not?

As water freezes salt is released increasing the percentage of salt in the ocean water, the higher the percentage of salt the lower the freezing temperature of the water. The cycle of water freezing -> salt being released -> more water freezing reaches equilibrium at witch point the temperature necessary to freeze more water is lower then the air temperature.

If you add salt to water does it make the freezing temperature higher or lower?

It make the boiling point higher, and the freezing point lower.

How can one differentiate between water and alcohol with tasting or smelling it?

Boil/Freeze it. The alcohol will have a higher boiling point and lower freezing point than the water will.

Do higher molar solutions have more energy?

Yes, due to higher no of solute particles the total kinetic energy will be higher, its proof is that such solutions freeze at lower temperature than a dilute solution (depression of freezing point).

If you mix water and rubbing alcohol will it freeze?

not at the normal freezing temp for water. the mixture will have a lower freezing temp

Why does freshwater freeze faster than saltwater?

Because of a phenomenon called "freezing point depression." Dissolving any solute in a solvent causes that solvent to freeze at a lower temperature than it would if it were pure (it also causes the boiling point to go UP). The salt in saltwater causes this effect. The amount the freezing point changes depends on the amount of dissolved salt.

Does salt affect the temperature of water -boiling point - freezing point?

i would opt for the Freezing point. salt decreases the freezing point of water. so if water would normally freeze at 0C, saltwater would freeze at -3C.
