Sand will not in itself help grass to grow but as an additive to the soil it will help with soil drainage issues if you have a clay or compacted kind of soil. It would be necessary to till the soil in order to add the sand....a daunting job at least.
I would recommend that you take a sample of your soil to a state university agricultural extension office or a local nursery to have your soil analyzed for its make up and for recommendations as to the best way to augment the soil in order for grass to grow better.
Speaking from a completely different perspective than lawn care, the short answer still remains the same:
No, sand will not help grass to grow.
But, this is where the long answer goes a different direction:
While grasses will grow on sand or in sandy environments, it's not the sand itself that allows those grasses to establish and grow there, but rather the microscopic soil life which encourages growth. That combined with needed growing conditions including warmth, moisture, and sunlight, will encourage a grass seedling, and therefore a grass plant and subsequent plants, to grow and proliferate.

Yes,both are temperate grasslands.
Grasslands are found were there is little rainfall. Mostly grasses will grow well here. You may see some small shrubs or a tree here and there. Abiotic factors are anything that is not alive. That would include rocks, sand, gravel, any water (including rain) and air.
