Shingles is the re activation of the chicken pox virus, Varicella zoster. Outbreaks when they do occur can last 2-3 weeks. The pustules then dry up and disappear although the affected area can often remain painful and sensitive for some time. The virus lies dormant in the nerve endings so never actually disappears. Reactivation can be caused by illness and stress as well as other factors, it is therefore possible to have multiple outbreaks throughout ones life.
