Yes, silver does affect vampires. According to Bob Bankard's article concerning vampire repellents:

Silver: As mentioned earlier, the old Romanian faith in pure metals is making a comeback. Hardly mentioned in earlier vampire films, it is quickly coming into vogue as the premiere weapon of the modern vampire hunter.

Interestingly, the concept of silver being toxic to vampires is as 'faith based' as crosses. Being less iconic, I guess the Agnostic vamps haven't figured that one out yet. Surprising, really - judging from what I've seen on South Street on Saturday nights, the Goths have known it for years.

Successful in: Dracula (1979), From Dusk to Dawn (1996), Dracula (1997), Vampires (1998), Blade (1998), Blade 2 (2002), Vampire Hunter D (2001)

Not Successful in:

Not Used in: Nosferatu, Dracula (1931), Dracula (1958), Interview with a Vampire (1994)

Besides Bob's article, if you look it up, there's a great deal of information stating that vampires do have an aversion to silver. Most likely it will be based on folklore and not on more recent tradition.

No, because vampires do not exist. You cannot affect anything that does not exist. But that said, it was indeed believed that the holy powers of silver would be extra-damaging to vampires, which were unholy.

Why does silver affect vampires?

The notion of silver harming vampires comes from Marvel Comics. From there, it made it's way into popular culture in movies and television. Silver does not affect vampires in the folklore. It doesn't even harm werewolves either for that matter. The use of silver as a weapon against monsters began with the Wolfman film of the early 1940's. Sunlight does not traditionally harm vampires either. That began with Nosferatu (the 1922 silent film).

Can vampires die?

Yes, there are several methods to affect this, including silver, garlic and "holy" allergies, burning to death, or the traditional stake through the heart. The effectiveness of the various methods depends on the supernatural qualities of the vampires, who are entirely fictional creatures. Each author assigns various qualities to vampires, following their general depiction as "undead creatures who live on blood."
