The fundamental difference is that evolutionary theory is a purely natural, scientific account of the origin and multiplication of all species. It does not need a supernatural creator. It is based on evidence and reason and changes as new discoveries are made. Genesis is an account in which a supernatural being creates animals, plants and humans in a short period of time ie 7 "days". Since the account is said to be inspired by the creator it cannot be changed by anything discovered since it was written.
