The nine gates are a metaphor representing the body: 1 mouth, 2 nostrils, 2 ears, 2 eyes, 1 anus and 1 sex organ.
They are a metaphor in the same sense as chakras -- both point to a spiritual reality but are not the reality itself ... in the same way as a finger pointing at the moon is not the moon ... and furthermore, the image in the sky is not the moon either ... you have to travel for 3 days to touch the real moon :-)
The point of the metaphors are twofold. Genuine people will quickly realise that they only *represent* reality without being reality itself. On the other hand, those that are "worldly" or "carnal" or "materially minded" or live primarily in their mind will not see beyond the physical descriptions and will get themselves involved in endless spiritual "practices" until such time as they are ready to move on from their ego to the world of oneness and spirit.
The kingdom of shadows is what most people consider to be the "real world". This world is an inferior world; the genuine world is the world of spirit.
The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows is a fictional concept created for the novel "The Club Dumas" by Arturo PΓ©rez-Reverte. It does not exist in reality.

No. It is a rather unusual hyphenated compound adjective. There may exist somewhere in fiction an actual nine-headed monster.
