What is the different between a nuclear bomb and an atom bomb?

Nuclear bombs before the 60s were referred to as atom bombs, because the term Nuclear hadn't been discover yet. Nuclear bombs today, are generally Hydrogen bombs, or fusion bombs. They are significantly more powerful, able to places about the size of Rhode Island. Atom bombs, which were mostly uranium and plutonium, lack the destructive power of Nuclear or Fusion bombs.

How do you protect your self from nuclear bombs?

If there is a nuclear bomb that explodes you will not be able to protect yourself. It will destroy and contaminate all of the surroundings for a long distance depending on the size of the bomb. Even several years of Iwo Jima and Hiroshima that are still people affected by the bombs.

Is solar energy more efficient than nuclear energy?

Nuclear Energy is able to produce a constant ammount of energy at all times where as solar energy does not.

How far could you protect yourself nuclear bomb?

You wouldn't be able to protect yourself, because you will instantly die if a nuclear bomb is dropped, as it is so powerful!

What was the atomic bomb used for when invented?

when leo szilard invented the neutron chain reaction in 1933 it was used for nothing as it could not yet be built. his 1934 patent on it suggests using it as a more efficient way to transmute elements, other possible uses mentioned were atomic bombs and power reactors.it was not until 12 years later in 1945 after spending 2 billion dollars (mostly on industrial infrastructure) that the US was able to begin building atomic bombs.after testing one atomic bomb on july 16, the next 2 atomic bombs were used as weapons in combat against Japan on august 6 and 9. ending ww2.

How many nuclear weapons did the United States have in 1945?

The first thing you have to understand is that the US did not stockpile usable nuclear weapons in 1945. The nuclear weapons available in 1945 came in unassembled "kit" form and took days for a bomb assembly team to assemble before use. The orders during World War 2 were to drop the nuclear weapons on Japanese cities as soon as they became available. The Manhattan Project had plans and facilities to make and use 23 nuclear weapons on Japan before the end of 1945, but only 2 were actually used. A third nuclear weapon was finished by Los Alamos and shipped to San Francisco but the Japanese indicated they would surrender and Truman ordered the nuclear bombing stopped before it arrived, so it was returned to Los Alamos.Soon after the end of World War 2 the Manhattan Project found it necessary to cut back production of plutonium significantly to limit unexpected radiation damage to the graphite moderator of the 3 Hanford reactors. Official declassified documents show that instead of being able to finish the remaining 20 nuclear weapons planned for 1945, Los Alamos was only able to finish 1 more due to the plutonium shortage from the Hanford reactors! Here is the timeline:July, 1 nuclear bomb built, 1 nuclear bomb exploded (Trinity test)August, 2 nuclear bombs built, 2 nuclear bombs exploded (Hiroshima, Nagasaki), 1 more nuclear bomb built, unusedSeptember through December, 1 more nuclear bomb built, unusedFrom this we can see that the United States built 5 nuclear weapons in 1945 but because they were used as soon as they became available the only time during the war that more than 1 nuclear weapons existed was just before August 6, when the first one was dropped on Hiroshima. At no time in 1945 did the United States have more than 2 nuclear weapons at the same time.

What would have happened if Hitler got nukes first?

That would have been catastrophic because Hitler was very interested in getting nuclear bombs, but luckily he failed, as he would certainly have used it against the Soviet Union and the rest of the allies. <><><> Strong probability that if they were able to produce enough nuclear weapons to be militarily useful, you would have asked that question in German.

What materials are used in nuclear weapons and bombs?

The question that you are asking in itself is quite broad as there are many types of nuclear weapons and bombs.. However, there are certain similarities to all of these weapons that are necessary to become nuclear. The materials themselves have to be able to produce a high amount of energy to be able to create that amount of destruction. If you have a chance to look at a periodic table, you'll notice the Hydrogen atom at the very beginning. The most popular type of nuclear bomb is the Hydrogen bomb, in which you take a hydrogen atom, and split it up into smaller parts.. However, this in itself takes huge amounts of energy and the energy released from this exothermic (energy-releasing) reaction is why it's so devastating. There's not really much materials used in a nuclear weapon other than a shell to hold the parts together upon needed release, and a machine or something of that nature to bombard the hydrogen atoms to make them split and a supply of hydrogen atoms themselves in order to make a hydrogen bomb. Now that's just one type of bomb...

Why should any countries cities states and ect not be able to have nuclear weapons?

The answer to this would vary depending on who you ask. Some people say that countries, cities, states, etc should not be able to have nuclear weapons because it is not only dangerous to the country that are the target, they also put that area they are located at in danger.

What safety is there of having a nuclear weapon?

A nuclear weapon is used to prevent being threatened by other nuclear countries. Say, for example, France got rid of all of it's nuclear weapons, tiny countries that had a nuclear weapon would be able to bully them into accepting bad deals or presurring them into not reacting when things happen. Most countries in the world would probably like to dispose of their nuclear weapons but they can not due to the fact of little countries with problems that will keep them would be able to threaten them and hold the world by it's throat.

Is nuclear weapons essential for this world?

No way..!! In my opinion I think that nuclear weapons are not at all necessary or essential for this world....today people might say that they are necessary for national security and all....but what about the time when nuclear weapons were not even created..?? Even then there used to be wars and many people died as a result...but today...if you drop a nuclear bomb not only deaths occur but also the environment is damaged...more killings of the innocent occur...They might be able to scare away another country from attacking but....once a war starts and there is usage of nuclear weapons.....there is much much more damage that takes place than it would really have if nuclear weapons would not have existed... both on mankind and the nature...!!!

Which type of nuclear reaction is used in modern-day nuclear reactors?

Nuclear fission is used in nuclear weapons to create what some might call an atomic blast (nuclear blast). Nuclear fission used this way can also be applied in special complex designs to generate enough thermal energy (heat) to initiate a fusion reaction. This creates an even bigger nuclear blast.

What is China's stance on the proliferation of nuclear weapons in Iran?

China holds that Iran should not be able to acquire nuclear weapons, but the Chinese administration argues that it is not clear that Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons and sees US/EU skepticism of Iran as simply a modern manifestation of Anti-Asian Imperialism. China also wishes to use Iranian petroleum to fuel its rise and cover Chinese energy shortfalls. This makes the Chinese less willing to cooperate with international sanctions on Iran designed to curb the nuclear ambitions.

Will russa nuke us?

Not being able to see into the future, there is a high likelihood that Russia will use nuclear weapons against the US and/or Western Europe. Most other countries that have nuclear weapons don't have the quantity to attempt an attack on the US. Russia is one country that DOES have sufficient quantity to make such an attempt. It doesn't mean they will.
