Can Tungsten Carbide Rings ever scratch?

Tungsten carbide can only be scratched or damaged by extreme measures, like abrasion from diamonds or corundum. Consequently, activities that would normally require the removal of conventional wedding bands for their protection can be performed without concern by the wearer of a tungsten carbide wedding band. While extremely strong and scratch-resistant, tungsten carbide is a bit more brittle than traditional metals used in wedding bands.

Is what is being called Tungsten jewelry actually the ceramic compound Tungsten Carbide or is there actual metallic Tungsten jewelry out there?

Tungsten jewelry is metallic. My husband and I have matching tungsten carbide rings with a mirror finsih. We have gotten so many compliments on them! The rings are super resistant to scratches. Some believe the only thing that can really scratch them is a diamond. We really enjoy our rings as they are heavy and we do not have to worry about them when we are doing things that many take jewelry off to do. There is a wedding band material called ceramic. It is not tungsten carbide. Ceramic comes in several colors and the most popular is black. What's great about ceramic rings is that the color is the same all the way through and is highly scratch resistant. This means that in the highly unlikely event that a black ceramic ring does scratch, the scratch will not be as apparent. Tungsten Carbide can be made into jewelry and is a metal. You can also combine these 2 materials together to make a highly scratch resistant and colorful ring.

Is tungsten tougher that tungsten carbide?

No. Tungsten is an element, where as tungsten carbide is an alloy, or a mixture of elements (tungsten, nickel, tantalum, niobium, titanium, and chromium). Tungsten carbide is much easier to work into styles and designs, but does not change the hardness of the metal.

What is tungsten hardness?

According to several publications Tungsten Carbide measures a 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. A Diamond measures 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale meaning it would require a diamond to scratch Tungsten Carbide. Tungsten has an official hardness on the Mohs Hardness Scale of 9, but can be as hard as 9.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale making it almost scratch proof. Now if you are talking about pure Tungsten the hardness is only 7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale making it softer than Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Alexandrite, Topaz and Spinel. When Tungsten is compounded into Tungsten Carbide the hardness rises greatly sometimes almost equaling the hardness of Diamonds. Tungsten Carbide is five times harder than 316L Surgical Grade Stainless Steel.

What two compounds are used to make tungsten carbide?

Tungsten Carbide is made from compounds of Tungsten and Carbon. At the base level, Tungsten Carbide resembles a type of fine dark powder. This powder then made into shapes by being pressed.

Are tungsten carbide rings breakable?

Yes, tungsten carbide rings can shatter when enough force is applied to the ring. These rings are very hard and highly scratch resistant. This also means they are brittle so you can break them with a hammer or a pair of vice grips. Source: LarsonJewelers.com

What are the differences between a tungsten carbide wedding band and a platinum wedding band?

Tungsten Carbide is a composition containing equal parts of Tungsten Metal (W) and Carbon (C). While Platinum (Pt) is a metal in and of it self. The letters in parenthesis indicate the chemical symbol on the periodic table. There are many differences physically between tungsten and platinum. Platinum is slightly brighter and has more of a silver shine, while tungsten carbide has a dark, shiny hue. On the Mohs scale of hardness, platinum has a hardness rating of about 4.5 out of 10, while tungsten carbide is a staggering 9.5 (Diamonds are a 10). Although tungsten carbide is harder to scratch, it is also brittle and can shatter if more than enough force is applied (ie falling from a high place, throwing it against the wall, smashing it while on a vice grip). Platinum and other lesser metals will simply take the scratch or dent, but won't shatter or break apart easily.
