If there is a chip pan which is on fire, the correct way to deal with this is to wet a tea towel, ring it out and then lay it over the top of the burning pan (this excludes the air from the fire) then turn off the heat under the pan and leave it to cool.

You must not throw water into the pan because the fat in the pan is hotter than the boiling point of water and this causes the water to boil and explode, throwing burning fat all over you and the room. Water over a chip pan turns a small, controllable fire into an uncontrollable inferno.

because if you put water on a chip pan fire it would make it worse it would set the hole house on fire instead put some thing heat proof on it and leave it for a while for the fire to go out and what ever you do don't take the heat proof thing off it because then the fire will start again because the oxygen will be able to reach it again so don't take the heat proof thing on it .

Why pouring water on to a chippan fire doesnt work?

The burning fat is much hotter than the boiling point of water so when you add water the water explodes into steam, shooting burning fat out of the chip pan into the air and round the kitchen. This spreads the fire. If you chip pan is on fire, turn off the source of heat. And place a damp teacloth or a lid over the chip pan leave and close the kitchen door and ring the fire brigade.

What is a chip-pan fire?

The Stages of a chip pan fire 1. Oil gets so hot that it catches fire all by itself 2. Water is poured into the burning chip pan 3. Water is denser than oil, so it sinks to the bottom of the chip pan (shown in red). As the water touches the bottom, it is heated above its boiling point and instantly vaporizes. 4. The water vapour expands rapidly, ejecting a fireball of burning oil out of the chip pan and into the air where its surface area increases greatly and combustion proceeds much faster

The flame heats up the metal pan because metal conducts heat well. Since the water is in the hot pan, it also gets hot.

Is a pan over a flame radiation or conduction?

Both the flame heating the pan and the pan heating the water are examples of conduction. Convection is when the molecules of water heat other molecules of water.

What do you do when you have a chip pan fire?

DO NOT THROW WATER on it. This will cause an explosion. Turn off whatever is heating it if you can. Dampen (not saturated) a towel and cover the pan with it, this will stop the flames. Get everyone out of the house and call the emergency service.
