No, R12 Freon or R134 are refrigerants. They are used to cool the vehicle and have nothing whatsoever to do with heating the vehicle. That is done by hot coolant flowing through the heater core.

While you don't need refrigerant to heat a car, try getting someone to let the refrigerant out of your car (or if your car has a sizable leak) & see what happens when winter gets here. The a/c refrigerant is circulated throughout the system to dry the windshield & windows off along with the heat from the engine. Without refrigerant in the system you'll be wiping a small hole in the windshield every few minutes so you can see what's in front of you. A somewhat dangerous practice. So, while you may not need it for heat, you'll definitely need it for defrosting. Most people don't even realize the a/c compressor is running when they turn the setting switch to "DEF". So, if your cars A/C doesn't work like mine did last winter, hopefully you'll have a friend who can help you fix it before it gets cold. Hope this helps.
