Actually, the mass of the Sun itself is hidden behind the Moon, but the tenuous and wispy atmosphere of the Sun, called the "corona", extends a few million miles out into space. The corona is fairly dim; compared to the brilliance of the Sun itself, the corona is invisible. But when the Sun is hidden behind the Moon, the corona is still mostly visible.
