Best Answer

day
The time it takes the Earth to rotate once is called a day (24 hours). The actual rotation time is somewhat less, nearer 23 hours and 56 minutes. But what is known as a "solar day" is almost exactly 24 hours, this is because of the distance the earth moves in it's orbit of the sun.

The Earth spins precisely once in 23 hours 56 minutes. We think of "one day" as being 24 hours, but during that 24 hours, the Earth is also traveling in its elliptical orbit around the Sun. Because the Earth travels at about 67,000 miles per hour, it moves quite a way during one day, and the Earth has to spin for an extra 4 minutes to "catch up" to where the Sun is.

So "one day", noon to noon, is 24 hours, but that's actually 361 degrees of spin!
