The ancient Egyptians had no coins, nor any kind of money before the 26th dynasty. Payment was always in kind, meaning that instead of money workers received food, cooking oil, clothing and other items.

Strict records were kept of all payments so we have a very good idea of the monthly wages received by different workers: a foreman received 5.5 khar (1 khar = almost 79 litres) of wheat and 2 khar of barley, ordinary artisans got 4 khar of wheat and 1.5 khar of barley (there was no distinction between artists and workmen - they all got the same). A doctor got 5 khar of wheat and 1.75 khar of barley per month.

Artisans and other workers also received allowances of bread, cakes, beer, oil, fish, vegetables, dates, pottery, clothing, sandals, firewood and other things.

Pay was supposed to be given out on the last day of each Egyptian month but was often delayed.

Between themselves, Egyptians would barter for the things they needed, perhaps giving some onions or leeks for a new dress. No coinage was required.
