An Electromagnet.
Take a screwdriver, and a put 50 turns of wire round the screwdriver. Now connect one wire to positive and one wire to negative of a battery and try to pick up some paperclips.
It can be, but not necessarily. It depends on the number of windings and the amount of electricity applied. An electromagnet is a form wound with wire that becomes magnetic when power is applied. Often, most or all the magnetism is lost once the power is removed, depending on the material used for the core.
Depending on the material used, the core of an electromagnet can sometimes become permanently magnetized. That is one way to create a magnetic screwdriver. You'd wrap the screwdriver shaft with wire and briefly apply direct current to both ends of the wire. After that, there should be some residual magnetism, and just enough to help hold a screw in place.
True. An electromagnet is only magnetic while an electric current is passing through the coil of wire. Very large electromagnets on a crane is a familiar sight in a scrapyard. It is used to pick up scrap metal from the ground and drop into a wagon for transporting to an iron foundry for recycling.
Yes.
Electromagnets turn on when an electrical current is sent through the wiring wrapped round the iron core. It ceases to be magnetised when the current is turned off.
Yes, the electricity can be turned on and off and so the magnet is on or off
Yes, simply disconnect the power source.
Earth hour is when everyone turns off the lights. Even in different countries the lights are turned off that would not have been turned off on a different day.
Scrap heap magnets are basically electromagnets. Electromagnets are magnets that can be turned off and on. When they are turned on, the circuit inside them, (which normally consists of a battery, a switch, coiled wire and an iron rod) switches on. The iron rod inside the coils of wire is magnetized once the switch can be on or off. Mechanically an electromagnet is relatively simple. As soon as you apply a small electric current it becomes magnetized. The copper wire produces a magnetic field around the core just like any other magnet. The advantage is that it can be turned on or off. The only magnetic elements are iron, cobalt and nickel. This means that electromagnets can only attract those metals. They can also attract steel. This is because it is mainly made of iron. This is useful because it helps sort the metals into allocated locations. However they cannot pick up paper, wood or any other metal that is not magnetic, or made out of iron, cobalt and nickel. Scrap Heap magnets work by a very simple but effective circuit board which is in them. The circuit board includes: - A switch (To turn the electromagnet on/off) - A battery (To power the electromagnet so there is a current flowing through it) - A iron rod (This is the component that is magnetized.) - Coiled wire around the rod (the current) When a scrap heap magnet is turned on by the switch, the iron core is magnetized because of the current flowing though it due to the coiled wire and battery. This makes it magnetized and it is able to pick up any metals that are magnets and its able to place them in their designated areas in the scrap heaps.
Magnetism is lost in an electromagnet when the electricity is turned off.
I believe this has to do with Pocahontas 2: Journey to a new world
With an electromagnet, the magnetism can be turned on and off according to the whim or need of the operator.
Electromagnet which uses electric current can be turned on and off.
True.. Yes, they operate by turning the current on and off
Electromagnets can be turned off and off
Electromagnets can be turned on and off.
Can be turned on and off.
The magnetic field dies.

Electromagnets' magnetism can be manipulated. Electromagnets can be magnetised and demagnetised by passing electric current. Therefore they are used in motors- which works when the coil is magnetised by passing an electric current. It is also used for cranes.
Electromagnets have an electric current running through them that enables there conductive power to be strengthened. However, a magnets full conductive power can never be "turned off/on".
because they can be turned on and off by opening and closing electric circuit.
Electromagnets are good because they are easily turned off which allows them to be used in a variety of practical applications. They are often used for picking up large loads of metal.
