Mercury the element is not really named after mercury the heavenly body: both are named after the Roman messenger god, Mercury.
Similarly it is unclear whether uranium is named after uranus the planet or Uranus the mythical Roman god.
Neptunium and plutonium definitely are named after the planets, and there is also selenium, named after the moon, and helium, named after the sun.
Neptunium and plutonium and uranium and titanium!
Comment: There's more too, but they're not really named after the planets
and heavenly bodies. It's just that the planets, etc and the elements are both
named after the same things. I agree that historically there was a connection
between the planets names and the naming of elements.
Uranium - Uranus
Plutonium - Pluto
Neptunium - Neptune
and Titanium may be named after Titan?
Multiple elements as listed by the Periodic Table of the Elements are named after bodies in the Cosmos. Helium (He) regards Greek Helios; the Sun. Mercury (Hg), Uranium (Ur), Neptunium (Np), and Plutonium (Pu) as in the planets, are others.
Three elements named after places are Copper, Berkelium, and Californium
Mercury, Plutonium, Uranium
Two are named for major planets: uranium (Uranus) and neptunium (Neptune). The element mercury is named for the Roman god of speed, as was the planet; but the element was not directly named for the planet. Two are named for minor planets: cerium (Ceres) and plutonium (Pluto). If the asteroid Pallas is promoted to minor planet status, then palladium will join that list.but the most common element named after a planet is uranium(uranus).
All planets are named after Roman Gods

Halley's Comet
Because the ancient Greek astronomers were one of the first astronomers to discover the planets. As they looked at the planets over time they moved into different places. The planets seemed o orbit the Sun so the Greek astronomers called them planets, which meant :wanderers.
Halley's Comet
Halley's Comet is one heavenly body named for its discoverer. The comet is named for Edmund Halley. Hale-Bopp is another comet named after its discoverers, Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp.

Comets are named for their discoverers. For example, Halley's comet was named after its discoverer, Edmund Halley. Many stars are also named for their discoverers.
See link. It has all the symbols for all the planets.
Mercury, Plutonium, Uranium
The Roman knew of seven celestial bodies, the sun, the moon and fiveplanets. The planets were named after some of their gods: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
Mercury, Uranium, and Neptunium were named after Mercury, Uranus, and Neptune (respectively). Although technically not a planet, Plutonium was named after Pluto.
