Enlisted people go to boot camp, and will initially do the majority of the "grunt work" on a ship (ie, sweeping, scubbing toilets, swabbing decks, etc). Once that enlisted person advances a few ranks, they will do less of that sort of thing. They do not get paid as much as officers, and also do not enjoy many of the privileges that officers do.
Navy officers are usually responsible for a group of enlisted people, and act as their manager/leader. They spend much more of their time doing paperwork, attending meetings, making PowerPoint presentations, planning, and other things of that nature.
This is a very generic response, as there are MANY types of officers and enlisted personnel in the Navy, with very diverse jobs and responsibilities. But hopefully you get the gist of it.
Statistics in the US military seems to show that there is a 40 percent higher mortality rate for enlisted service men versus officers. There are exceptions to this finding. US Army lieutenants have a 19 percent higher death rate than all the rest of the US Army troops combined. It is also a known fact that a US Marine lieutenant is 11 percent more likely to be killed than the regular US Marine troops.
