Well, there are lots of kinds of poetry. Some of it rhymes, like the old Roses are Red / Violets are Blue idea:

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Sugar is sweet;

And so are you.

And there is free verse that doesn't rhyme, but which is a more popular form for modern poetry:

Beyond flowers,

through thorns,

you.

Which still captures some of the idea of the first poem, but just expresses it in a different way. The idea of poetry is basically taking a big idea that you could write about with a lot of words and trying to compress it into just a few words, and get that concentrated purity of meaning. Check out the link to Poetry 180 below for some good examples from professional poets. The poems are very different from each other, so read through several to get an idea of what you like and what you don't like.

A lyric poem is a poem that shows that one has passion towards a subject. For example, a poem that talks about music or a person and shows the poet's feelings towards it.

Lyric poetry is usually a form of poetry with rhyming schemes that express personal feelings. It doesn't need to, but can be set to music. It will normally have a repeating stanza (set of lines) similar to a chorus.

Check the lyric poems of William Butler Yeats. Yeats' The Cat and The Moon may not be the deepest poem ever written, but it is lovely and it is lyric. I get chills every time I read it. The poem: " The cat went here and there And the moon spun round like a top, And the nearest kin of the moon, The creeping cat, looked up. Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon, For, wander and wail as he would, The pure cold light in the sky Troubled his animal blood. Minnaloushe runs in the grass Lifting his delicate feet. Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance? When two close kindred meet, What better than call a dance? Maybe the moon may learn, Tired of that courtly fashion, A new dance turn. Minnaloushe creeps through the grass From moonlit place to place, The sacred moon overhead Has taken a new phase. Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils Will pass from change to change, And that from round to crescent, From crescent to round they range? Minnaloushe creeps through the grass Alone, important and wise, And lifts to the changing moon His changing eyes. -- William Butler Yeats"
