An ecosystem can sustain so many organisms. That limit would be its carrying capacity. If the population goes above that number then other factors will cause the population to crash and then rebound to a constant level.

Ex.-- Take your backyard for instance. Let's say you live on a 1/2 acre lot. Rabbits move in. Those rabbits may breed unchecked but for the fact that predators will move in too, some will become food. There's only so much grass in your yard, so some will starve. Too many in one spot will invite disease to spread. The carrying capacity of your yard is the maximum number of rabbits that can live there.
