Clara Barton was a nurse for the civil war she set up hospitals near the battlefields, and helped the wounded soldiers. soon she was know as the Angel of the battlefield. Clara returned to the united states and started the American red cross.
Clara Barton was important for many different reasons. The most obvious and important one is that she helped many wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Not only the Yankee's but also the Southern Rebels. Ms. Barton didn't show any fear and went right onto the battle field DURING BATTLE! When the camps moved, she would fallow the trail of soldiers in a wagon and pick up the fatigued soldiers that would fall to the back of the pack. Many leaders during the Civil War, on both sides, didn't agree with what Barton was doing and tried to get her arrested and imprisoned many times however they failed.
Clara Barton got her nickname because she and her people would visit Civil War battlefields and provide nursing care for the wounded. This was at a time when most people treated for wounds were pretty much left to die or survive on their own after the surgeons finished treating them.
