∙ 13y agoDuring the reign of Cleopatra there were, so to speak, two Egypts. The Greeks who were the overlords and the native Egyptians who were the underlings. The native Egyptians were answerable to their Greek overlords in all aspects of their lives and although they had certain rights, they were not allowed to advance politically beyond their local nomes. The country was a vast bureaucracy with the Pharaoh (Cleopatra) at the head. Alexandria was the capitol and controlled by Greeks. The language was Greek. Women had just about equal rights with men throughout the country. All people had to give a portion of their income to the ruler.
