slapstick is an element of Commedia Dell'Arte (which originated in Venice between the 16th and 17th century). It usually features 2 charcters, a stupid one, and a smart one. The stupid character usually accidentally injures the smarter character, these injuries often lead to others.

Slapstick is still used a lot today, in movies, and by comedians such as The Chuckle Brothers.

Slapstick features "The Rule Of 3", these are

1) set up the joke

2) build tension

3) surprise!
