Montag loves fire and the way it makes him feel in the beginning. On the first page he discusses his love of the way burning books makes him feel. Clarisse begins to change his opinion about everything in his life including fire and why books are burned in his society.
Montag chose to become a firefighter in "Fahrenheit 451" because it was a well-respected occupation in his dystopian society, where firefighters burned books instead of putting out fires. He embraced the role without questioning its implications until he encountered different perspectives that made him reconsider his beliefs.
One example can be when he read that poem to Mildred's friends. Knowing that they'd call in and get him in trouble, he did it anyway.
Another example can be when he killed Beatty and knocked out the other firemen. Doing that gave the other fire departments a reason to chase him down and try to kill him, so he was on the run for quite a while until they killed some poor fellow to cover up Montag's escape.
he did not chose his profession his father was a fireman and so was he! :)))))
