The answer is debatable. In 1891 John Lambert built a 3 wheel car in Ohio and Henry Nadig built a 4 wheel car in Pennsylvania. The first American Automobile Company was Duryea Motor Wagon Company founded in 1893. Ransom Olds was producing cars in 1897. Henry Ford built his first car, the Quadricycle in 1898.
