that only let white people enter the country
Basically, when Australia became a federation in 1901 the establishment of the white Australia policy could actually be done as there was now one SINGLE government controlling immigration. Immigration (or the restriction of immigration) was one of the reasons that people wanted Australia to become a federation. Prior to Federation, some Australians believed Federation would enable the development and maintenance of a "White Australia", by toughening immigration laws. There was lingering resentment over the Chinese who had come during the gold rush, made their fortune (as they were far more industrious than Australians) and then returned to their own country, taking their fortune with them. Some stayed and set up businesses in towns, but they were always looked down upon. It was hoped by some (not all) that a White Australia policy would ensure employment for Australians. Some colonies were opposed to this policy as they used foreign labour, which was often much cheaper than local labour. An example of this is Queensland, which employed Kanakas (people from the Cook Islands). Under the new constitution, not only the Kanakas, but also the much-feared Chinese, who came to Australia during the gold rush, would not be allowed into Australia. Thus Federation would eliminate unwanted foreigners, providing more employment for Australians.
The United States barred Japanese immigration.
Unrestricted immigration means the host country allows any and all immigrants, with no restrictions on who or how many may immigrate. This was practiced in the US many years ago, but currently immigration is tightly restricted here.
In the 1920s, U.S. immigration policy underwent significant changes with the introduction of the Immigration Act of 1924, which established strict quotas based on national origin. This legislation aimed to limit immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe, reflecting a nativist sentiment and a desire to preserve the country's existing demographic makeup. The quotas were designed to favor immigrants from Northern and Western Europe, significantly reducing the overall number of immigrants and effectively barring many from entering the U.S. The laws marked a shift towards more restrictive immigration practices that would shape U.S. policy for decades.
* We received a wide range of culture including food, religions, etc. * They helped us build the Snowy Mountain Scheme which would not have been completed with all the extra help (2/3 of workers were immigrants) * When they first came, Australia was in a desperate shortage of labour. * They helped our population grow. * They helped our economy boom when they first came and it still does.
None. It is a law that has more than 20 years of being implemented (Immigration Act of 1990), and as a result, many Mexican people immigrate into the country illegally.
Australian governments have generally supported immigration as a contribution to economic growth. Although immigration policy was discriminatory until the 1960s (under a policy of "White Australia"), there is now widespread community support for accepting racial and cultural diversity in Australia's intake of migrants. Australia also accepts refugees under terms of the relevant UN Conventions, although community concerns about refugees are sometimes exploited politically.

The White Australia policy was the Policy of the Government of the time - it was not imposed through a vote. Like so much Government policy it was not supported by many of the voting public at that time. Australia already had a large Chinese population (post the Gold Rush of the 1850's) by the time this poicy was in effect and they would not be expected to have supported this policy
Abouriginals have lived in Australia for many thousands of years. :)
