Four wheel drive on your 2000 ford excursion will not engage?

One easy and cheap to fix cause is a disconnected or broken vacuum hose.

The vacum hose comes out of a compressor on the passenger side of the vehicle. If it is leaking you will hear the compressor running when you turn on the ignition, don't start the vehicle... just turn the ignition to the on position. If the compressor motor is running and running. it is a sign that there is a leak. check that the hose is conected correctly at both front wheels. remove the front tires to do this. Not engaging and air leaking can also be a sign that either one or both of your hubs are bad. they are actuated by air pressure turning the hubs into 4wd. I you asbsolutely must have 4wd In an emergency you can get out of the vehicle and manualy turn the hubs to 4wd. Easch front wheel has a turnable hub that can be turned to Auto or Locked. You want to ALWAYS keep it on auto unless your auto isn't working in an emergency and you need to lock them. this is actually a GREAT feature from Ford that does allow you and emergency option in a pinch. most 4wd trucks and suvs don't have controllable hubs and if they fail you are out of luck.On mine, one of the hubs was bad so I replaced both of them with warn hubs.
